Thanks a Bunch

There are certain baby shower and newborn gifts that have never won me over, the diaper cake being chief among them. They’re big business and I certainly mean no offense to the lovely ladies that make them - they’re just not my thing. However, I do like the idea of presenting a new parent with practical basics packaged in unusual and clever ways. For example, there’s a Nashville based apparel line called The Milkman that appropriately packages their onesies and toddler tees in reusable, retro glass milk bottles. Nice, right?

And then there’s a company called The Baby Bunch that takes a nice selection of solid color cotton (organic is an option) caps, sock, tee, onesies, receiving blankets and the like and turns them into faux floral bouquets. I readily admit that this is a concept that could go horribly wrong, add in loud patterns, lace and some baby’s breath and you’ve got yourself an aesthetic nightmare. But these folks kept it simple and it works. You select the clothing that makes up the bouquet and then decide if you’d like it presented in a galvanized metal pail or a floral box with a clear top lid. And priced from $29.95 to $69.95 they’re less than most anything you could order from your florist.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you’ll hear
Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

Small Fashion, August 2007

picture name

During the next few weeks I’m going to be introducing a number of guest bloggers, each with a specific area of expertise in the realms of kiddie culture and design. Today I’m excited to welcome Christine Visneau and Olivia Pintos-Lopez, editors of my favorite online magazine Small Magazine, champions of independent design for the short set and now Junior Society resident fashion gurus. (Hurray!)

Each month Christine and Olivia will focus on a different kid and dress him or her according to their personality traits. Links to the designers and shops where you can find their fashion finds are listed below the images.

Character Profile:

First day of school, it is still warm but autumn is falling and colors are moving from green to yellow. New school clothes for a seven year old girl who still secretly believes her dolls can talk to her, went through a stage not long ago when she wouldn’t wear pants, always could hang upside down and run fast and do back flips on the beach. She makes up elaborate games to play with her two best friends that last for days. She likes insects and animals, princesses and painting, fables and fairies. She hates her school uniform - if it was up to her this is what she would wear.

A Cupcake Kind of Day

picture name

picture name

Birthdays are a big deal when you’re a kid. Although we all know that the first one is really a celebration for the adults who managed to keep their crying, colicky, peeing, pooping, hungry, helpless bundle of joy alive for an entire year - that and a photo op for the one time in the kid’s life when he’ll be permitted encouraged to dive into a piece of cake head first. And while Junior’s mugging for the camera with his frosting hair-do you may as well dress him in an outfit suited to the occasion - and what better than a shirt emblazoned with his birthday number (and coordinating number of cupcakes, if you so choose!)

Liliputians NYC boasts more than two dozen number shirts for your birthday boy or girl, and a great selection of coordinating pants and skirts. Big graphic numbers in celebratory prints are beautifully appliqued onto soft cotton tees, most of which are available for ages 1 through 8. And while it’s fun to have a new outfit for that special day, your kiddo will look great in these great shirts all year long.

And better still, our pals over at Liliputians are offering one lucky Junior Society member the opportunity to select any one of their birthday shirts in your choice of color and style absolutely free! Simply leave a comment on this blog post listing your favorite style Lilliputian birthday shirt by 11:59 pm this Wednesday, August 15th. I’ll draw one name at random and announce the winner on Thursday. (We won’t hold you to the style you list on your comment should you change your mind between now and when you win!)

Carnival Wear

Like many others I love the lore and images of Coney Island past. The park’s heyday is generally considered to have been from the 1890’s to the early 1900’s during the run of it’s most famous attractions Luna Park (1903-1946), Dreamland (1904-1911) and Steeplechase Park (1897-1907, 1908-1964). There are continually waves of discussion about redevelopment and revival which (fingers crossed) will actually pan out one of these days. But the idealized loop that runs in my head continues to feature salt water taffy, the magic of early electric lights, amusement rides, bathing suits that cover everything from the knees up and fantastic old signage hawking everything from side shows to hot dogs.

New kids shop on the web Silly Wagon carries these great tees and dresses (along with allot of other ridiculouly cute stuff!) featuring distressed graphics that look like they could have been lifted off the now fading and peeling marquees and billboards of Coney Island present. Vintage photos and postcards are from the Coney Island Pages, an online resource with more extensive history and images than I’m able to cover here.

picture name

And what’s this? A giveaway?!

The fine folks over at Silly Wagon are offering up a couple of their generously sized, handmade cotton canvas totes (see below) for hauling around all of your carnival prizes and souvenirs. Actually, they’re a great substitute for plastic grocery bags and are heavy duty enough to withstand countless trips to the library!

Simply comment on this blog post by midnight on this Wednesday August 8th and I’ll randomly draw two winners to be announced on Thursday. Easy right?
